BAMBI VAN BALEN
Slow Wave Dream Station 01 is an experimental Do It Together (D.I.T.) medication centre, an immersive liminal environment consisting of synchronised inflatable light sculptures and a sonic installation. The installation departs from the healing properties of colored light frequencies. Omitting various light patterns, most notably in a colour spectrum between dark blue to pink, rhythmic affective lightscapes are produced. These light pulsations are translated into bioelectric activity in the brain, slowing the cerebral frequencies down to the so-called alpha waves, which is within neurobiology associated with REM sleep and actual dreaming.
The work is inspired by the Dream Machine, a work of Bryon Gysin and Ian Sommerville from the 1960ies; a cut-up cylinder with a light bulb inside that turned around, creating a flicker effect of 78 pulses per second. People stared in the Dream Machine with closed eyes and had hypnotising visionary experiences.
In Slow Wave Dream Station 01 visitors can self-manage the light patterns by logging into a website with their phones. They can also choose their own sounds. In this way Slow Wave Dream Station can become a space to relax, to decrease your brain waves and to self-medicate from everyday stress and or the space can become a gathering for spontaneous raves.
